Sandown - Moody nine wins clear after double
Wednesday, 13th January 2010

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody has opened a nine-win lead in the Melbourne trainers’ premiership after preparing a double at Wednesday’s Sandown Hillside meeting.

Chateau D’yquem led all the way to take out the Indian Summer Handicap (1400m) before Macedonian completed Moody’s brace of wins in the Castletown Handicap (3000m).

The win was the son of Zabeel’s third win in nine starts and Moody’s stable foreman Tony Haydon said Macedonian would be guided through his grades for the rest of his preparation.

“He’s just taking time to find his best form and this win will give him another kick along as he learns about his job,” he said.

“He’ll go along quietly and we’ll find something else for him in the next couple of weeks.”

The stable was narrowly denied a treble when the Danny O’Brien-trained Cyclone Al ($7.50) narrowly held off Merryvale ($7) to win the Special Dane Handicap (1800m).

“This horse is a good filly in the making,” Haydon said. “She was beaten today but she did a terrific job. She could be an Oaks horse later in the autumn.”

Moody has trained 32 winners in Melbourne this season with his nearest rival Mark Kavanagh on 23 wins.

Meanwhile, the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra partnership was in the winner’s circle for the fourth city meeting of 2010 when River Crossing scored a game win in the Marie Louise Handicap (1400m).

River Crossing ($7.50) finished strongly from the tail of the field to beat the David Hayes-trained Eau De Joie ($4.60) with Charlie’s Queen ($6.50) in third.
