$500,000 Top Lot on Tough Day One at MM Wednesday, 6th January 2010
A full brother to Group One winner Headway topped the first session of the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, but the clearance rate of just 73% fell well short of satisfactory on what could only be described as a tough day for vendors.
Headway's trainer Peter Moody was delighted to be able to nab the full relation to one of his stable's stars for $500,000.
Offered at the sale by Turangga Farm, the bay colt was one of the most admired youngster at the auction and it was no surprise to see Moody chasing him hard.
"He's a lovely colt," Moody said. "He's a bit bigger than his sister."
Moody took a liking to the colt at the early age on a past visit to the Scone based property.
"I've seen him since he was small and I've always liked him. I'm happy to have him coming to the stables to train."
"Shared will be sliced up amongst a number of stable clients."
"And he might look pretty cheap if his sister comes out in a few weeks and wins the Lightning (Stakes)."
The brother to Headway was just one of six yearlings purchased by Moody during today's first session at a spend of over $1 million.
The Ingham family spent $730,000 on five yearlings - including a cracking colt by their former star galloper Lonhro.
Anthony Cummings outlaid $720,000 on six youngsters, while the Hong Kong Jockey Club snapped up four exciting prospects for a tick over $1 million.
Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh was active and purchased three yearlings for $640,000, while stable client, Shocking's owner Laurence Eales snapped up a pair for $250,000.
"There was a great buying bench on hand today and they competed for a great line up of youngsters," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said.
"There were buyers on hand from every state in the country as well as many overseas locations," he added.
Chester said the session was a good one, but hoped the figures would continue to rise over the remaining sessions of the first section of the auction.
"I'm hoping for the clearance rate to rise tomorrow during the second session. There are some lovely prospects to go under the hammer."
The second session of the sale will kick away at 11am (Qld time) tomorrow.
