Avenue shows her class again
Saturday, 24th October 2009

Brilliant filly Avenue completed a winning hat-trick in the Group III 1300 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday but is unlikely to be seen again in the spring.

Despite taking her record to four wins from five starts with her first win against the males, trainer Peter Moody said he would recommend to the filly’s owners she be sent to the spelling paddock.

“She was pressured early but was able to relax midrace and it panned out in her favour,” Moody said. “It was pleasing to see her win and we look forward to having her out in the paddock for the autumn.”

Jockey Luke Nolen pushed Avenue out of the gates to hold out the Darren Weir-trained Broken in the first 200 metres before Nolen was able to back the speed off slightly midrace.

Nolen pushed Avenue three lengths clear on the point of the home turn before riding the filly out hands and heels down the short Moonee Valley straight to hold off Governance to win by a half-length.

“She travelled well on the bridle herself. She could have led by further if I let her slide,” Nolen said. “But I think that’s the end of her for this prep and hopefully she comes back in the autumn to Group I class.”

Broken stuck on well after trailing Avenue for the majority of the 1200-metre event to hold third, 1-3/4 lengths from the winner.

Moody said the only realistic spring option left for the daughter of Anabaa was next Saturday's Group I Coolmore Classic at Flemington but the Caulfield trainer thought the big autumn sprints would be suitable for Avenue.

“She’s physically sound but mentally she’s a bit immature,” Moody said. “I think a couple of months in the paddock after this could be the making of her.

“Something like an Oakleigh Plate could be a reachable target for her next time in.”

The placings and margins: Avenue (Luke Nolen) 56kg ($1.65) defeated Governance (Kerrin McEvoy) 55.5kg ($21) by a half length with three quarters of a length back to Broken (Craig Williams) 57kg ($26) in third place.

Winner’s breeding – Avenue is a three-year-old filly by Anabaa (USA) out of Virage (Kenmare (FR)).

The time and sectionals – The field covered the 1200 metres in 1.10.09 with the last 600 metres run in 35.34 seconds.

What they said – “She’s all class,” said Luke Nolen, winning jockey.

“The visor on him helped today. He’ll be well suited next time at Flemington,” said Kerrin McEvoy, rider of the Governance (2nd).

“He’s a beauty, a real trier. He gets the 1200m but that filly is a superstar,” said Craig Williams, rider of the Broken (3rd).

“She ran well. It was a nice effort,” said Hugh Bowman, rider of Marquardt (4th).

“It was a nice effort and he’ll be a better horse in the autumn,” said Damien Oliver, rider of La Bella Encosta (5th).

“He didn’t try today. We’ll put the blinkers on him and back him up next week at Flemington,” said Dwayne Dunn, rider of Common Interest (6th).
