Paddock beckons for 'fragile' Avenue after Saturday

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody has all but ruled out a start in the Group I Coolmore Stakes for the brilliant filly Avenue, even if she records a comfortable win at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Avenue has won three of her four starts, with her only defeat coming at the hands of Group I Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights but Moody said the filly was not ready for a shot a the top level yet.

“She’s just such a high-strung filly, the whole Derby day experience might be too much for her,” he said. “She’s highly unlikely to run in the Coolmore, I’ll probably send her to the paddock after Saturday.

“She’s a mentally fragile sort of filly and I really think we’ll see a more mature horse when she comes back in the autumn. I reckon she’ll be right for Oakleigh Plate or something similar.”

Before the daughter of Anabaa goes out for a spell, Avenue has an appointment with the male three-year-olds in the Group III 1300 Australia Stakes (1200m).

Moody will go into the race with plenty of confidence after Avenue’s easy win over the Golden Slipper runner-up Headway in the Group III Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield on October 10.

“She was just too brilliant for the others at her last run,” Moody said. “She comfortably handled a good filly and she’s weighted to win again on Saturday.

“She’s unbeaten at the Valley and she will be very hard to beat but she probably won’t back up next Saturday, even if she wins easily.”
