She's back - Typhoon Tracy in the winner's circle
Monday, 19th October 2009

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody’s judgement was vindicated when Typhoon Tracy comfortably took out the Group II Harrolds Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Moody decided to abandon Cox Plate plans and focus on shorter events after the mare’s unplaced effort in the Underwood Stakes a month ago.

Typhoon Tracy responded well with a freshen up, so much so, Moody suggested to Typhoon Tracy’s owners they have something on the daughter of Red Ransom to win the $180,000 event.

“It’s nice to be right for once,” Moody said. “She’s had nine starts and I’ve never told the owner to have a bet on her until today.

“She’s just come right in the coat. She’s turned the corner and I think there’s still a bit left in the tank.”

After jumping well, jockey Luke Nolen positioned Typhoon Tracy on the back of the leader, Singapore’s Jolie’s Shinju, before going for home on the point of the home turn to open up a three-length break.

Glamour Sydney mare Hot Danish followed Typhoon Tracy for the majority of the race but was unable to match the winner’s sprint, going down by 2-3/4 lengths.

“She enjoyed chasing Jolie’s Shinju,” Nolen said. “She usually takes time to go through her gears but this time she let down quickly.

“I knew Hot Danish was just behind me but once this mare hits her top; there aren’t too many horses in Australia who can run her down.”

Moody said he expected Typhoon Tracy to improve in the lead-up to her next run in the Group I Myer Classic at Flemington.

“We’re really looking forward to Derby day now. She’s only going to be better next time out.”

The Clarry Conners-trained Glowlamp had every chance but ran her usual honest race to finish third.

The placings and margins: Typhoon Tracy (L Nolen) 57.5kg ($3.90) defeated Hot Danish (D Nikolic) 57.5kg ($3.30 fav) by 2-3/4 lengths with a length back to Glowlamp (G Schofield) 53kg ($81) in third place.

Winner’s breeding – Typhoon Tracy is a four-year-old mare by Red Ransom (USA) out of Tracy’s Element (Last Tycoon (IRE)).

The time and sectionals – The field covered the 1400 metres in 1.22.89 with the last 600 run in 35.50 seconds. Typhoon Tracy ran the fastest last 600 of the race in 35.35 seconds.

What they said – “She was actually off the bit down the side but she picked up really well,” said Luke Nolen, winning rider.

“She ran well. The winner was just too good today,” said Danny Nikolic, rider of the runner-up.

“It was a terrific effort. She did her very best,” said Glyn Schofield, rider of the third placegetter.

“Very good run. She’ll enjoy the mile at Flemington,” said Kerrin McEvoy, rider of Neroli (4th).

“She ran right up to her best,” said Michael Rodd, rider of Alverta (5th).

“The gate killed out chances but she ran well,” said Glen Boss, rider of Tootsie (6th).

“She worked early. That was her only excuse,” said Nash Rawiller, rider of Gold Water (9th).

The marketTyphoon Tracy firmed from $4 to $3.90. Hot Danish opened at $2.50 before easing to $3.30 and Glowlamp eased from $71 to $81. Gold Water firmed from $8 to $7 while Neroli eased from $7 to $8. The market closed at 113 percent.
